One of the biggest challenges I tackled for our enterprise teams was designing a system that allowed reps to share a territory while still keeping individual accounts private. This required a major shift in our product logic and introduced a lot of complexity, especially for admins managing permissions and visibility. I led the design process and collaborated closely with engineering and support to ensure the experience stayed intuitive and the rollout went smoothly. After several rounds of post-launch iteration, we refined a solution that protected data privacy without creating friction for users.
Overview
At the time, Map My Customers’ territory system only supported geographic record assignment. Enterprise customers needed teams with specialized roles, different divisions, or product lines to operate within the same territory while maintaining visibility only into their own accounts.
The solution was a single territory model powered by rule sets that controlled visibility rather than ownership. Reps could view a combined experience based on their assigned rule sets, while admins could filter by those rules to audit performance and analyze activity. This eliminated the need for duplicated territories and prevented hidden overlaps between teams.
